Re: [Simply Computers] 32 bit or 64 bit

David,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you are talking about 32 bit vs. 64 bit processors (that is, hardware)

I believe Phil was referring to 32 bit vs. 64 bit Windows.

Not to say that you are wrong, but I think we need to clarify which we are talking about.

As example, your statement "32 bit machines support up to 64 GB of RAM
"... may be true (I don't know), but this 32 bit Windows I'm running only supports 3+ GB.

It's the difference between 32/64 bit processors and 32/64 bit software, and for the benefit of those who don't recognize the difference, perhaps we should be state of which we speak?

A 1 Ghz processor has 1 billion clock cycles in a second.
>

>
> There is a common misconseption that a 32-bit system can only address 2^32 bytes of memory which works out to 4 billion bytes, or 4gb of RAM. In truth, 32-bit systems have had support for PAE since the mid 1990s which allows them to support 36 bits of data, which is 2^36=64GB of RAM. The 4GB limitation on 32-bit machines is an artificial limitation in Windows that Microsoft has put into place to make people pay a little more for 64-bit support. I have 16GB of RAM in my 32bit Ubuntu installation that works fine.
>

Fortunately for us 32-bit users this is also incorrect. All CPUs have an instruction pipeline that can pre-fetch data before executing the instruction and so adding the extra bits really doesn't make a difference. In fact, since there are more transistors in a 64-bit chip than a 32-bit chip, and you have to wait for all of the wires to finish before moving on to the next instruction, some 64-bit chips are actually slower (in Ghz) than their 32-bit counterparts - or they can't be overclocked as much.

Only people who are rendering video (Pixar) or doing complex scientific calculations (NASA) would notice the difference.

[The Computer Hardware Technician] VAIO PCV-RS220 No sound

Windows XP Home
Recently formatted and installed OS
Had a virus and sound
Now the sound properties say that the drivers are all installed but there is a problem. I have tried using the onboard sound and I also tried a good working pci sound card. Same results. No yellow exclamations marks or question marks.
Speakers work on another computer.
Suggestions, please. Thanks.
I am pretty good and building, rebuilding and troubleshooting most computers. I am stumped!

[Simply Computers] Re: Ways to connect my laptop to internet connection

If you want to unplug your desktop computer from your modem and plug in your laptop computer, you do not need to buy a router.

A router is only if you want to use your desktop and your laptop at the same time.

But take a look at the back of your modem ... if it has more than one jack with which to connect a computer, it is already a router!

Re: [Simply Computers] Dial up or broadband

Pat,

I see that others have helped you connect using XP, but I'm wondering if that's a good idea.

The school installed Win 7 for "personal use" ... they probably configured XP to be compatible with their network.

When your son-in-law takes the computer back to college, will it still be able to connect to the college network now that you have changed the settings?

Perhaps you're son-in-law should use Windows 7 when at your house ? ... you've already confirmed that it works.

[Simply Computers] Re: changing browsers

Cindylee,

I think Vincent is right ... the problem you're having may not be that IE is acting badly, but that you may have picked up a little malware that is making it act badly.

Using Firefox may fix the problem temporarily (or may not), but you need to make sure that your computer is clean, or else you will always have the problems, and they may get worse.

Re: [Simply Computers] Intel D915GAV Won't Boot

I think you're overlooking the obvious, and so are wasting your time.

( but if I'm wrong, it won't be the first time!)

You need to boot the computer with an XP install disk in the drive, and see what happens.

We've discovered that the motherboard is incompatible with Win 7, but we don't know why.

I suspect that Win 7 does not include a SATA driver for your onboard SATA controller.

But that is just a guess. Win 7 includes driver for almost anything, but if the motherboard manufacturer (Intel) says that the board does not support Win 7 or Vista, I assume that they know more than we do.

If Win 7 does not include a SATA driver for your controller, that would explain why the BIOS recognizes the drive, but Windows does not (and does not proceed)

Or it may be something on even a lower level.

Normally, we would expect an error message, but perhaps Intel did not code in the message: "this motherboard does not support Vista or Win 7"

Please try booting with a valid XP CD, and let us know what happens.

Re: [Simply Computers] desktop setup

I group icons of card programs in one folder and
DVD programs in another. I leave the folders on the desk top.
It takes up less space that way.
They usually stay as icons within each folder, but lately they have
gone to list.
I hope that explains it better.
