A typical camera "format" doesn't actually write over the contents of the drive. Instead, it changed a few bytes that demarcate the File Allocation Table (FAT) so that the table that allows the computer to find the rest of the data is reset to make the drive appear completely blank. After formatting, all of your data is still present on the drive (unchanged), but the computer assumes it's all just garbage empty space that can be overwritten. It should last just as long as if you deleted the files directly.
