Problem solved.
I down graded to FF 3.6, and the same problem persisted, this was using an install file I have backedup and have used before.
I uninstalled FF from the PC, rebooted then installed again, using the same install file.
3.6 worked to perfection, then I upgraded to 4.0, again using the install file that I had in storage. I am using it as I type, not one sign of the extra tabs.
I conclude there was a corruption in the installation, or that the Freecorder tool bar might have been an issue.
