My guess is that there is a very thin ribbon that the printer uses for
aligning the cartridges. I think either the ribbon or the sensor might have
been damaged. So the printer can't sense anything and thinks it's not moving.

Why will it not turn off?
I may get an HP and a warrantee.

Are you going to buy an HP?

Alan those are good sites and I thank you. If my printer had only followed
instructions I am sure I could have fixed it.
Now unplugging is the only way to shut it down.
Any suggestions on HP printers?
I will be buying one tomorrow.

Hi Jacqueline,
Printer problems can be a real pain. I also use an HP 6500 and luckily
I've never had a problem so
far - great printer. If you google for "general printer error 061011bec",
you'll see that you're not
alone with this problem. People sometimes have it just after they've
unpacked the printer. At least
you've been able to use yours ;-)
You don't have a paper jam do you?

Here's a website with various solutions - give these a try first.

Alternatively, have you tried calling HP? Here in the Netherlands at
least, they offer good support
for their printers.
