Then with his computer and IE8 go to Dell and have it auto-detect the rest he needs. Although some could be with the M$ updates under Optional.
Be warned, sometimes you may have to add a VGA or sound card instead, at least I have found this to be true. I have even tried the CNET drivers, etc.
With practice and the help of the DOS system-info tools on the Hiren's Boot CD, I can find out what the name of the sound card is, the VGA, but I'm not sure what the SM...means, maybe SATA, maybe their chip-set stuff in general.
Perhaps the ISP would need you to run ipconfig /all on his computer? I think with Cisco it was ifconfig /all...just in case my memory is faulty ;-)

I did DL the Intel driver to a flash drive, put it on his computer & the Ethernet with the yellow ques mark went away. The other three are still there
Multimedia Audio
SM Bus Controller
Video controller (VGA)
with yellow ques marks. Also, if the ethernet is downloaded & working, should I be able to connect to the internet now? He has a wireless adapter that connects from the connection that I have (I'm connected with the phone line), that's says it's working correctly but I still can't get him to the internet. I'm thinking maybe I have to call Verizon to re-enter the connection settings?
Also, how do you figure out what drivers are needed? It's like the person said in the forum link you posted, there are so many choices, it's hard to know what's needed.
Thanks bunches!!
Jeanne
If you get an USB to Cat5 NIC cable adapter WinXP will see if and allow you to get the rest of the drivers.
The other way would be to use a Linux Live CD to download the Dell LAN
driver at least, then start up Windows to get all the updates, etc.

The last one on the above link is the driver.

Ok....so while I was waiting for my new memory, my son ended up with a
virus on his computer. I couldn't get rid of it so I reformatted. The
device manager says we are missing drivers.....
Ethernet
Multimedia Audio
SM Bus Controller
Video controller (VGA)
I went over to Dell on my computer to look for them but I have NO
idea!! ackkk! Device manager wants to connect to the internet to find
the drivers but I can't get him connected without the driver(s) so I'm
stuck. I did use the resource cd that came with his computer but
apparently the drivers I need are not on that cd? Can you help?
Dell 4600.....Win XP
Thanks.....a very appreciative to people that work on computers,
Jeanne
