I like your link and have discovered how to save an event that happens every
4th Friday in June. I am not a big phone user but the 150 does not scare me
away. I would not, however, go much higher.

Your move to gmail/google contacts/google calendar is a great move. Most
smartphones work really well from this ecosystem. There are some fairly
inexpensive AT&T compatible Android phones available online if you can swing
$100 or so. Just search for "unlocked gsm android" online. This will give
you a low end smartphone (sometimes known as a featurephone) that will sync
your email/contacts/calendar with Google's servers wirelessly and
automatically when you have a wifi connection, even if you don't pay AT&T
for a data plan. These phones will play music, manage your photos, and even
allow you to install android apps.
Here are some of your options:

The phones that run under $150 without a contract are pretty low end by
today's $600+ ($200 if you sign a 2-year contract) smartphone standards, but
certainly way way better than your Sony W518a. How much are you thinking of
spending?
