Laptops do not rely on the house mains 120 VAC - of course it would not
be affected. Wiring can degrade over time. You need to do some checks of
the wiring and measure the voltage at the terminals while under a load.
In one house I lived in, my computer would not boot unless I unplugged
my aquarium.
