There really is no "true" speed outside of a laboratory situation.
SpeedTest, mentioned below, will give you a measurement between you
and another selected computer. If you choose further and further
targets you will notice that your speed will trend downwards.
If you try www.numion.com you will get a test that measures between
you and about fifty servers around the world. This gives you what I
would call a "figure of merit" that should reflect your real-life
experience. This site also offers aggregate graphs, you-vs-the-world
or you-vs-the-USA (or other country), as well as maintain a history
of your tests (up to twenty) which you can schedule to occur over
perhaps a 24-hour period.
Numion is especially useful if you use it at many different locations
in your neighborhood or community or on different providers. Over
time you get a feel for what is normal, what is exceptional and what
needs more scrutiny.
