When modems go bad, they generally just go bad without warning. A slow degredation of the quality of your connection is more likely related to some sort of external interference on the line. Have you made any changes to the configuration of the room that contains the mode, or perhaps moved/installed any new electrical appliances in your house? Has the recent heat wave caused you to use your air conditioner more than you used to perhaps?
