You state the drive should be partitioned. I believe Windows 7 does that on the install, but why is it necessary with XP or Vista?

You could use a free program which overwrites the drive.

Note that after you have ''nuked'' the drive (which will still be good
as a drive) you will lose all data and any operating system. You would
need to partition, format and do a fresh install of an operating system.
