Hi,
Although the test given by Roger is a good way to
check your line (don't use one or zero!), you
need to understand two things: first, is that the
phone company is only obligated to provide you
with a voice-grade line not a data grade line.
And secondly, the phone company's obligation ends
at the connecting box ("d-mark" [for
"demarcation"]) outside your home. Any problems
inside your home are on you to fix.
If you do have line problems it doesn't hurt to
try to make friends with the tech who comes out.
They are usually assigned to a given area
(especially true in rural service) and they may
be able to suggest things or do things that
aren't spelled out in his work order. One might
be to get a new phone number if that will give
you access to a newer trunk line (i.e.less corroded wires).
