Unmountable boot volume is not a nice place to be FB. Nothing really works - Safe Mode, Last known
configuration etc. It's a pain. Vincent already sent the standard Microsoft fix using the recovery
console. Hopefully, that'll work if you have an original XP CD but you'll find a lot of people on
the Internet searching for a good solution for this particular problem. It sounds like you're
already resigned to a reinstall so you just have to recover your data from the hard drive.
The good news (to look on the bright side) is that there's a very good chance that there's probably
nothing wrong with your data. Unless there's something wrong physically with the drive itself. But
this is often purely a boot-related issue. Especially since you say this happened just after you
uninstalled Norton. I assume you used the Norton removal tool to uninstall?
I'd recommend buying an IDE/SATA to USB 2.0 adapter for this job. They're pretty cheap. It looks
like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
Once you have that, you can take the hard drive out of your laptop (only a couple of screws on the
bottom), remove the cradle/tray that hard drive sits in (another four screws), connect the hard
drive to this adapter, plug the adapter into the USB of any other working computer and you'll see
your own hard drive in Windows Explorer as you would a memory stick or external hard drive. Then
just copy or transfer your personal files to the new computer or an external device.
