In my gmail account, the "conversation view" sorts by date - which is
acceptable to me because date is almost as good as true threading since
threads typically evolve by date with only small splinters. Like
eudora, Thunderbird, which I am writing to you in right now, fully
preserves the threads without breaking them up.
