Obviously, we can't be there looking over your shoulder, so we have to guess what might have happened.

It's also obvious that you know your way around computers.

You hooked up a new display and it didn't work, so you hooked up the old display and it worked fine.

Was the laptop still apart at the time? You said: "So I put the laptop back together with the old display, and now it's not working"

It sounds like you still had it apart when you plugged in the old display to test it.

Then when you put it all back together, it didn't work.

So you must have made some mistake when you put it back together.

If it was me, I would take it apart again. (lots of work, I know)

If the connecting cable got damaged, the old screen will not work when the laptop is apart.

If the old screen works when you take the laptop apart again, then you know you pinched something, or put a screw in the wrong place.

As you know, the screws are various different lengths, and if you put a long one where a short one is supposed to go, then you could short out something.

Just guessing, of course, but it seems that when you put it back together you did something wrong.

While you're waiting for the new screen, why not take it apart again and lay it out, and see if the old screen comes back to life?
