Hi Liz,
What does it do when it shuts down? Does it crash (just sit there and is unresponsive), or does it power itself completely off, and you have to push the power button to restart it?
Or does it restart itself?
You said you had to push the space bar to start in normal mode ... I'm not sure what you were seeing when you had to do that.
Were you in the Troubleshooting Menu? ( the one that has Safe Mode at the top, and Start Windows Normally near the bottom)
I would try running in Safe Mode with Networking for awhile (when the computer boots up, just before you would expect to see the Windows logo, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard)
You may have a hardware driver that is conflicting with a memory space that Java wants to use. Running in Safe Mode will keep many drivers from loading.
Running in Safe Mode with Networking will allow you to get onto the Internet.
If the computer does not crash in Safe Mode, you can start updating drivers, beginning with the video driver.
