[Simply Computers] Blue Screen-1 v V Adapter- 0; Apples v Oranges?

Hi, Vince, David, et al - be warned, I've come up for air, again ;-)

Vince - re 209921 - you DO feel the fact that my own operating system CD's are for XP HOME, while XP PRO had been loaded on to the laptop by a techie when doing a reinstall - would make a difference??. IOW, either reformat (ng at the moment) . . OR ..use an XP Pro operating system CD on the offending machine when using the repair/reboot method?? (That techie 'owes me')
Our 'guru' had not felt it should make a difference ;-(. He'd used the repair protocol, learned via the 'diagnostics' that the harddrive itself IS okay. Re-ran the 'repair' protocol twice, each time getting 'unable to access data' reports.. "

And David, (1) re: 209935 - "But, when the data is still there, there are tools that are capable of seeking out and restoring what is left of your deleted files" - What are these? ;-)
Re: 'put drive into another (ANY OTHER?) computer, or, use a Linux Boot CD on my machine, whatever it's currently loaded with?? Are these Linux Boot CDs generally available/downloadable/etc? ;-))

And to one and all, my sincere apologies for being obtuse/dismayed, at not 'getting it right immediately' when trying to acurately describe, or even know, what the issues are or may be. Hopefully, we'll all survive, and succeed ;-))
Gulp, and regards!!
