It's good to hear you're up and running.
Given the time and energy you've already expended, I would still argue for a clean install of a new OS. I have always performed clean installs for one reason: If you have a problem you're not worried about the influence of another OS in the problem-solving mix.

I was reinstalling XPP because that was the only disks I had and kept getting serious error messages (e:\1386\asms and other missing files and a password violation) during install. I thought I done a mirror on my external using Macrium but I saved it wrong 'cause there was no info. For a while nothing would install so I used Hiren's to format and it all worked out. The win 7 Pro numbers I got with the computer are bogus but I did copy the OEM #'s from sys info and have ordered reinstall disks based on that. I have read on microsoft that upgrades to Win 7 can be achieved from XP 3. BTW - Dell is happy to sell you Win 7 upgrades, but they do not offer ANY driver support after install. Anyhow, thanks to you and Joan.

To get it running again I did a reinstall of XPP but now (I have the original numbers I copied from "System Information" and I cant find the proper link on Microsoft - or I just plain don't understand it. I have googled "reinstall Win. 7 pro using coa numbers" and get all kinds of different answers. I guess my point is - what is the best way to go about this?

Yesterday, I went to play an old video while cleaning up the drive and after about a minute, the screen went black but the sound continued. I waited and after a fashion I tried cont/alt/delete but nothing came up. I never got a picture os any kind and did a force shut down. Yhat was kind of THE END!! I restarted the computer and it came back to life briefly and then went black. I managed to try "system restore" and black screen again. Tried my back up disk - black screen.I get as far as starting windows with the icon, then black scrren again. The cpu running light runs briefly and then shuts sown.
