As Joan indicates a clean install of W7 is your only option. Do a quick format of the drive and install it. If it's an upgrade disk there are directions on the web at Paul Thurrott's site. Basically your options are a 2x install or a simple registry hack. Both ways work well.
Was the installation of XP merely experimental? One wonders why you put it on over W7 in the first place. I'm guessing you just wanted to see if anything would install?

To get it running again I did a reinstall of XPP but now (I have the original numbers I copied from "System Information" and I cant find the proper link on Microsoft - or I just plain don't understand it. I have googled "reinstall Win. 7 pro using coa numbers" and get all kinds of different answers. I guess my point is - what is the best way to go about this?

Yesterday, I went to play an old video while cleaning up the drive and after about a minute, the screen went black but the sound continued. I waited and after a fashion I tried cont/alt/delete but nothing came up. I never got a picture os any kind and did a force shut down. Yhat was kind of THE END!! I restarted the computer and it came back to life briefly and then went black. I managed to try "system restore" and black screen again. Tried my back up disk - black screen.I get as far as starting windows with the icon, then black scrren again. The cpu running light runs briefly and then shuts sown.
