Taken in order asked:
Routers are not necessary but recommended. This is because of Internet cyber attacks on unprotected computers. It has been shown an average of 15 seconds after a computer is detected that an attacking virus will try to take over and make it a "zombie".
A router looks like a computer to the rest of the Internet. But it has no hard drive, no RAM, and no way to be controlled by the outside world. It passes data in and out, and can act as or run a "firewall" utility to prevent unwanted passage of bad programs.
A router also lets more than one computer share an Internet connection.
Some DSL (phone line Internet) modems from AT&T act like a router as well. The 2Wire brand one I got from AT&T had 3 wired ports and a wireless broadcast link for multiple computers. It worked fine as long as the underground phone lines did not get wet in the winter months. And, I had to live within 17,000 feet of the main phone office in order to get a good link.
A laptop or desktop with a phone modem jack and a phone cord can be used on dial-up to the Internet if you have such an account. It is painfully ssssllllooowww compared to broadband cable modem or DSL modem Internet.
Repair of WinXP can be done without a factory reset. See:
