[Simply Computers] Ways to connect my laptop to internet connection

 

Must I purchase a router or can I simply unplug my modem and connect it to my laptop to use the internet temporarily or what are ways may I use to connect the laptop to the internet??
Also, I am about to try a repair for my OS windows XP following the directions on windows web site. I get way too many error messages when I try to startup and or install/uninstall a program.
Can I take this desktop back to a restore date on which I installed everything in the beginning and will I loose all my documents etc.
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Jean in Georgia
