Re: [Simply Computers] HELP!

Ah, Alan et al, there you are, on my favorite(not) subject, at the end of the year, at that. What a way to go. Perhaps you'll remember my total discomfort(spelled p-a-n-i-c)last spring when I'd somehow inadvertently dumped what may have turned out to be OS(?) components and I'd had a reinstall done, and lost most of my 'documents/data' as a result. Even though it would be after the fact, Alam'd kindly spelled out, step-by-step, what repair steps might have saved the day/data/documents. I've never forgotten the kindness.
Nor the follow-up advice this fall when I'd met up with the Blue Screen of Death, when that adapter was recommended. However, after the fact, I learned the reason the adapter may not have worked was because my laptop had been loaded, by the tech, with XPPro, instead of using the XPHome disks I'd supplied ;-(
I've also learned that pages on the internet may display the text of a given link differently, depending on the computer one is using to view it. Vince had recommended a link that when accessed using the library computer advised the instructions in the text might not apply to the computer being used in resolving the difficulty described. It was a month before that possibility had even occurred to me. Afaic, the text should be revised, as there's no way Vince could have known. Though that computer is still not functioning, hope springs eternal.
On to this stand-in computer ;-( Tonight, while flopping the cursor around, suddenly 3/5 of the desktop icons disappeared. Were it not for my having FF loaded, I couldn't have been at SC2 right now. I had two instances of the recycle Bin, but none of the missing icons showed up there. Nothing seems to be missing from the add/remove file. System Restore did not work. When the IE icon had displayed, it took forever to load. Advance System Care keeps bugging me to update; I like the version I have better than it's replacement. I've not been able to figure out how to get rid of what I don't actually need to navigate quickly. I've gone to run>msconfig> but haven't the know-how to deal with it, not that I've much 'know how' to begin with.
However, new year wishes to all; it can only be better.
