Yahoo is two things:
1. A mail service used to send and receive mail.
2. A mail client - an interface used to interact with that service.
Many people don't know that you can continue to use the Yahoo Mail service without actually logging into http://mail.yahoo.com , the web-based e-mail client, and instead use a third party service. Here is a video that shows how to set that service up. It uses IMAP which means that you can freely switch between using thunderbird and the yahoo mail web site and all of your mail folders (including inbox and sent) will be properly synchronized between both.
