[Simply Computers] DVD/CD Rom drive

Hi: I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop and the DVD/CD Rom has stopped reading DVDs. This wouldn't be a problem if my recovery disc is a DVD.
I tried replacing the drive but the computer didn't find the new one. Thinking I got a lemon, I purchased a second drive. Same result. I am using XP and, according to the Internet, XP automatically finds the drives. The drive itself lights up when it is opened so it is getting power but the computer can't read anything put in it. The drives look identical. I can't see why the old one is there but the new ones vanish. Anyone got a clue. Is there something I need to do to make the computer recognize the new drives? Failing that, is there a way I can transfer the DVD recovery drive data onto two CDs? The old drive will read and boot from a CD.
Thanks for your help.
