I have had the same problem with my computer, and after searching for a
program, I came across this program that is called "Fix, Clean, Repair."
This worked perfect!! It was also great since it was a free. I'm a single
mom with 3 children, so this program was a godsent!!
Here is the link: "Fix, Clean, Repair"

Sounds like you have a browser problem and not a connection problem.
Can you use email programs like outlook that do connect? are you able to
ping a website by its address and IP
if you can the restore browser to default settings or install a different
browser
Since this is XP you can open my computer and use it as a browser as well
If no programs can reach the interent and others can on your network check
to see if you have a valid IP address... some programs try to force an IP
in the pc and that will block browsing. multiple firewalls are now to do
this especially black ice it could also be malware... there a couple that
lock you down in the browser trying to redirect you via a proxy
If thi pc is directly connected or you have multiple pcs failing on the
network it may be your network config and a network reboot may resolve
