Various ways:

Install the freeware version of a hardware analysis program like SIW:

This will tell you exactly the type of memory installed, how many modules etc.

Look at your brand of computer or your type of motherboard on crucial.com or let it scan your
computer as suggested already. This will also tell you the maximum capacity of RAM your motherboard
can support.

Go to the manufacturer's website (if you have a brand computer) and enter your service tag number.
Check the technical specifications there.

Open up the computer and look at the labels on your memory modules.

The physical differences between the three types of DDR are minor. They look similar but the notch
is in a slightly different place so they won't fit physically in the wrong type of motherboard. DDR1
and 2 is most common. DDR3 is relatively very recent.
