Re: [Simply Computers] Re: Dell 4600 Drivers

Jeanne,

A few alternatives for you about the drivers with question marks in the Device Manager. These four
are often missing after a format and re-install of XP. The three that are left can be fixed in
different ways.

Once you get your Internet going, right click on each of the devices in the Device Manager and let
Windows search the Internet for the necessary driver. That's sometimes the quickest fix. Windows
will install them automatically.

If that doesn't work, and assuming you've got your Internet working, start downloading all the
Windows updates you can find including Service Packs 2 and 3. Keep going back to Windows update
after rebooting when it's necessary (various updates require a reboot). Since you re-installed using
the original XP CD belonging to the 4600, you've gone back quite a few years. It's probably the
basic XP without the service packs. You've got a long way to go to bring it up to 2011. That's the
tedious part of a complete format and re-install of an older computer. It's update, update, update
and update again. You may find that after you've installed Service Pack 2 that the question marks
have disappeared in the device manager.

If the question marks are still there, go back to the Dell website and download the Intel chipset
driver (Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility) from the 4600 drivers page. Install the chipset
driver. This should fix the SM Bus Controller at least (and hopefully the other controllers).
Although you should actually find the chipset driver on the resource CD as well (in theory).

Next suggestion - click on Change Your Product on the 4600 drivers page and enter your specific
service tag number that you'll find either on top or on the back of the computer. Then you should
see the exact drivers that are necessary for your configuration. The 4600 was sold with a choice of
different audio and video - especially video. See which ones come up for your service tag.

The audio is either ADI 198 integrated audio or Creative's Sound Blaster Live - or Audigy. But I've
always come across Live in these kinds of computers. Have a look at the back of the computer to see
if you have a Sound Blaster card as shown here:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=124955&doclang=en&l=en&s=dhs

If you don't see a separate Sound Blaster audio card, you'll need to download and install the ATI
198 Integrated audio driver. http://tinyurl.com/23rd9lf

If it's SoundBlaster, you may still have the original CD which was part of the software package
delivered with the computer. Then you just run that and install the software. Or you'll have to
download the driver from the Dell website.

Alan
