I recently recovered from a near disaster with my HDD files with the help of
Windows 7 backup, but My final complete recovery was with Acronis. I can
recommend it from experience, and several True "Guru"s here have recommended
it. It has both free and paid versions. I started with free, and was
impressed enough to go to paid.

PS I know you said Vista, but I'm sure it is OK on both.
