There are any number of free alternatives. Here's a sampling of those with a pretty good reputation:

In addition, there are drive manufacturer versions of Acronis True Image but you would need to know who manufactured your hard drive.
Finally, many of use Acronis True Image which is not freeware, but it is very good. You can usually find it on sale somewhere on the web. And, there's a new version just out yesterday.
