I'm only vaguely familiar with XP at this point and only played with the backup system at bit when XP first came out so my information is dated. Drive imaging would do what you want. With the apps, I would tend to save the OS and programs as one package if that's the way your system is setup (i.e., drive c:\ contains XP and your applications / programs).
