[Simply Computers] Re: Missing operating system

That would normally be good advice, but her laptop reports:

drive c: 40gb, free space 40gb, drive d: 112.gb and
used space 3.12gb.

What I can't imagine is how C: got completely deleted. She says it's a laptop she bought for her daughter to use, about a month ago.

As you know, you cannot delete Windows, nor reformat the drive that Windows is in, while Windows is running.

Not that young people cannot be endlessly creative, but what would such a person have to do to completely wipe their own C: drive, and why?

The computer has neither floppy drive, nor internal CD/DVD, so she would have to what? start the computer from a bootable USB thumbdrive and from there reformat C:?

But why? Possibly an infected thumbdrive that, if left in the computer during boot up, and IF USB is set as first in the Boot Priority, runs a program that completely wipes your C: drive ?

That would be a nasty trick to play on someone.
