All you have to do to open a new tab is to click on unlabeled small tab on the right. I don't understand your problem.
Why do you say more applications are compatible with IE8?

I have Internet Explorer 8.........because more apps are compatable w/ it.......Alt / Enter opens a new tab, but if there was a different way to open up a new window or tab, I would really like to hear it......
