Rose, you have me confused. Is this your subject? Reason I ask is that your
questions seem different than the subject. That notwithstanding, age and
dirt are the 2 major culprits (of several) of failure in optical drives. So
if it's old then I would suspect it's just in need of replacement, but
you'll only know that after you've taken a shot at cleaning it.
Cleaning is not difficult really but it will require you to remove the drive
from the case, and then open the drive. It's mostly keeping track of screws
and small parts and remembering where they go. Digital cameras help with
reminders of where things go. On the other hand, these drives are cheap and
probably much faster than what you have now.
There are also drive cleaning things you can purchase if you're not up to
the disassembly / reassembly.
