If you want to unplug your desktop computer from your modem and plug in your laptop computer, you do not need to buy a router.
A router is only if you want to use your desktop and your laptop at the same time.
But take a look at the back of your modem ... if it has more than one jack with which to connect a computer, it is already a router!
