[Simply Computers] Re: Phone/internet/computer connection?

Since you are using the MIFI device already, you probably won't see any speed increase by switching to a cell phone connection to your computer--MIFI is a dedicated cell phone!

Connecting a cell phone to a computer to allow Internet access is called "tethering". Your cell phone carrier determines the speed of the Internet connection to your cell phone no matter how you "tether" it.

If you already have a cell phone contract with a carrier and do not have a "smart" phone, you could probably save some money by dropping the Verizon MIFI and "tethering" the smart phone to the computer.

I've used a program (app) called PDAnet on a Windows phone on Verizon in the past and got reasonable connection speeds while travelling. PDAnet is available for Android and iPhone also. The speeds available through a cell phone network are getting better, but I doubt they will get fast enough to rely on them for primary connectivity to the Internet on your computer.

Now, if you are stuck in an area where dial-up is your only choice, then "tethering" to a cell phone would probably be faster.
