[Simply Computers] Re: Can't play AVI files ?

I neeeeeever installed any codec on any machine I have ever built. Just VLC.And all workked perfect on all machines i have built. And that is a ton of machines. One thing,I have seen codecs really hose a computer so bad people had to bring them to me to fix,,

I have had peeps bring in machines where installed those codec Lite packs and the games they had would not even play.. Now I need to mention I am running Win-7 here and all 6 machines in my home. This a very good conversation about this topic. Perpaps I will learn something/or perhaps u will. VLC also runs perfect with no codec download on XP machines....If i am missing something please let me know, ok ? But I really want to fix this guys issue ,and it sounds like you do too ( ;:)

Re: [Simply Computers] Re: Can't play AVI files ?

Actually, you do. And. for you, there is a working set already installed.

Go to Control Panel | Sounds | Hardware (tab) and
find Audio Codecs and select it. Then click the
Properties button (below the list) and then the
Properties tab to see your installed Audio
codecs. Going back to the list under Hardware,
find Video Codecs and follow the same procedure.

For XP - other OSes may vary.

Really, you have to have codecs or nutin' A/V would work!

I think you will need the codec ("compression / decompression). Look
in the left hand column for XVID

Re: [Simply Computers] error messagr

You've gotten a good answer as to how to eliminate this message.

Likely you had an infection that was cleaned by your AntiVirus
program but a pointer was left in your startup files that points to a
file that hopefully on longer exists. (You DO have a current
up-to-date AV program, yes?)

At any rate, find the Temp folder in Windows and delete everything there.

looking for more advanced photo editing software? There are a bunch of free

Re: [Simply Computers] backup and restore

Roger--
Man! am I sorry for you. The old saying, "Been there, Done that" has a new,
and bitter taste. If there is ANYTHING I can do, let me know.
About the new HDD-- I ordered it before I recovered, and it has not been
opened. Hard drives are inexpensive, these days. This is a SATA, 750Gb drive
with fair buffering and 7200 RPM speed. With shipping, it was under $50.
The main drive was 1Tb, split between C: and D: The internal backup was
500Gb added after I got the machine. I increased the power supply capability
at the same time.
I am undecided about my future steps. Vince has recommended replacing the
C-D drive with the new one and keeping the present one "under test". Since I
am working "OK", I may wait till you find out some more.
Good luck--Bill--W4BSG
