Re: [Simply Computers] Brain Center

Howdy, back atcha

I think I would call it a "wiring closet". But "brain center" sounds
very cool. Some may also call it a "utility closet".

Servers are generally dedicated units have a large volume of
information which needs to be simultaneously accessed by many other
computers. A large accounting firm, for instance, may have all their
client information stored and available on a centralized server so
that several worker bees can be massaging the data as necessary.

I have not yet found a reason to have such as device in even the more
sophisticated home systems such as you have described.

For maintenance access you need only to allow a tech to jack into a
network router rather than have a stand alone unit in your central closet.

Personally I prefer to have all rooms hardwired and to limit the use
of wireless. If I have the opportunity to prewire a house under
construction I like to over-engineer it with bundles of every kind of
cable in every wall that I can convince my client to permit. Around
the third year of someone living in a custom built house all the
furniture has been moved and new outlets for any of a number of A/V
purposes have to be installed.

An air conditioning duct should be part of your planning. If you are
on an exterior wall you can use a room unit if needed.

Make sure to use an experienced A/V-Computer tech who understands the
security needs of high end housing. He can help you with your blind
spots. An example might be that you need a UPS for your security
system and maybe the computers with security cameras should not be on
a network with Internet access.

Etc.
