Hi Peter
First of all, welcome to our Group. Second of all, thanks for posting a message which not only contains the basic info that we need, but also is written in a format that is easy to read.
You will be surprised at how many people come here looking for help, but just "fire off" their posts as one long, run-on sentence. There was even one instance where I had to copy the message and paste it into Notepad, and then sort it out with commas and paragraphs, before I could even try to interpret what the person was asking!
Anyway, back to your problem ... does the power light on the monitor come on? is it green or yellow?
If yellow, it is not getting a signal from the video card (or video chip on the motherboard).
If green, and you get no display, (plus no indication that the hard drive is being accessed), then the computer is getting stuck in POST (power on self test).
Unfortunately, with no display, it can't tell you where it is getting stuck!
Do you hear any beeps?
If the light on the monitor is yellow, then I would suspect that part of the power supply got fried. It supplies different voltages to different circuits, so the fans may work, but the motherboard does not.
You could try replacing the power supply, but you might want to Google for how to test it with an inexpensive Radio Shack voltmeter (VOM) first.
If the power supply tests good, it could be something else like fried memory boards or blown CPU chip, but the motherboard is the next likely suspect.

Even when I've had HD trouble in the past, I at least got the Gateway logo, and the usual diagnostic screens. This time nothing happens, no video to the monitor. I am able to put a CD in the DVD/CD rom and it blinks, but nothing loads or is shown on the monitor.
