Hi,

I would like to revise this answer just slightly. My recommendation
is that you use the >right< mouse button to drag the icon to the
desktop. The reason is that if you use the left mouse button you get
the "default" action of the drag operation. I do not know what that
is but it might be "Move" and you may not want to move the icon.
Using the right mouse button will give you a menu when you release
the icon onto the desktop which will likely include Move, Copy or
Create Shortcut.

That is, it gives you the choice of what happens next - even Cancel
if you have grabbed the wrong icon.
