Yes, they can "play virtually anywhere", but not because they are YouTube videos, but rather because of the format (filetype) they are stored in.
As long as the person is running an OS with a video player that plays that type of file, it will work.
.mp4 is a popular file format, as is .mov (requires something like the free Quicktime player)
Do you need to have your videos embedded in a webpage (actually play inside of your webpage), or is it sufficient just to provide a link where people can go to view them?
If the latter, then checkout free video upload sites like shutterfly.com and photobucket.com.
