Well, I finally got the file repaired. I didn't try the
safe mode (didn't think of it!!) , but I have Norton's Antivirus CD.
So, in desperation, I put that in the drive and it checked for viruses,
etc. It
also allowed me access to the hard drive, so with a
few DOS commands I was back in business with the
damaged file.
Problem solved!
Thanks for all the good suggestions...will remember to try the
safe mode bootup next time and see about an emergency boot disk
as well.
