Subject: [Simply Computers] Partial Repost - disappeared icons, slow
navigation, 'readers'

Tonight, while flopping the cursor around the desk top, suddenly most of the
desktop icons disappeared all at one time. T.G the FF icon remained, else I
couldn't be here now.

Checked the Recycle Bin(one of the icons remaining), but none of the missing
icons showed up there.

Nothing seems to be missing from the add/remove file(reached from the start
button).

System Restore did not work.

When the IE icon had displayed, it would take IE forever to load.

Advance System Care keeps bugging me to 'update'; I like the version I have
better than it's replacement. Does that slow things down?

Though I use only WordPad for creating and pasting copies to, I can't edit
or add to a copy, only 'View it'. I don't have Word/Office installed; only
foxit reader and office word viewer.

I've not been able to figure out how to get rid of whatever (program/s?) I
don't actually need 'loaded/running'(?) in order to navigate quickly. I've
gone to run>msconfig> but haven't the know-how to make useful changes(?)

I don't know what else now to add by way of info. This is an Inspiron 1100,
with XPPro. I could list the remaining icons, and what programs are at
add/remove, or post whatever else needed. Am a very unskilled user,
deteriorating by the minute(what a way to start the year) ;-))

Happy New Year, anyway.
