RE: [Simply Computers] Re: Corsair A50 Air Series HSF

Hi Roger and Happy New Year.

To clarify, these are largely experiments on my part. I'm an enthusiast with
a small toy budget <g>.

Does my wife need the system I built for her. Absolutely not, but it's fun.

The arctic cooling splurge was actually functional initially. I want
ultra-quiet so I went with the Antec Sonata case. I find the stock AMD
coolers noisier than their OEM, upright counterparts. Plus, research that
I've done suggests the tower-type coolers are reportedly better at cooling
than top-fan versions. And their relatively cheap if you wait for sales and
such.

The Corsair was an option because I thought the airflow pathway was the same
as for the AC HSF. Thinking it fit onto the mobo in the same way the AC did,
I bought because it was narrower to accommodate the taller ram modules.

With the direction of the airflow different it becomes a non-usuable cooler
/ fan or one that can only be used with lower height ram modules. What I've
learned in the meantime is that the fan draws air from the bottom of the
case and blows it into the front to back path of the airflow in the case.

I did a bit of experimenting earlier today. I have 4 gskill lower height
modules of the same variety as the taller Corsairs. I split the tall and
shorter into sets of 2, placing the lower height modules closest to the HSF
on the 2 desktops. But that experiment is with the AC HSF on both as well.

I think I'll try the Corsair cooler next weekend when I have some more time
to play. I'm pretty sure now that with the smaller modules it should fit
into the socket on the motherboard. And it will be interesting to see how it
cools.

Hi Vincent,

Not sure what your question is, or if you're asking one.

One question that came to my mind is what about the stock cooler?

I know you change them on all your desktops, is that for quieter operation?

Is your wife a power user? If not, then the stock cooler should be
sufficient. It's engineered to work with that cpu.

I'm thinking that the stock cooler is probably much more compact, and may
leave room for the extra ram.

Perhaps the super-fans are overkill in her instance?

Otherwise, I see that the former cooler has a four-way mounting option,
where apparently the new one does not.

So, perhaps your question is how will the airflow in the case be affected.

The purpose of the cpu cooler, obviously, is to remove heat from the cpu, so
the question is how to direct the warm air from the cpu cooler fan.

That will depend on the location of other components that may need cooling
(RAM, video card, chipset, hard drives) and on what other input/output fans
you have in the case.

You'll notice that the diagram for your four way cooler shows a secondary
case fan, either positioned to direct air into the input side of the cooler,
or direct air away from the output side.

As you said your new cooler directs air to the bottom, I assume there's no
case fan there. Could one be placed low on the rear side of the case to draw
out the warm air directed to the bottom of the case?

But again I'm wondering if the stock cooler would suffice in her situation.
