[Simply Computers] Re: WinXP

Ok, I read it.

So?

Yes, XP is the dominant OS now ... but that is changing everyday.

XP is dominant because it came with most computers when they were purchased. (and many of us upgraded from one of the prior versions)

Nowadays Windows 7 comes with most computers.

Starting sometime next year, most computers will come with Windows 8.

Microsoft has already stopped supporting (fixing) problems with XP other than SP3.

In 2014, they are scheduled to stop supporting XP altogether.

This does not mean that XP will stop working, only that Microsoft will no longer fix any problems that turn up.

The chart you referred to shows XP as installed "globally". There are many third world countries running XP who may never upgrade. ("never" being how many years in computer time?)

The chart also includes businesses worldwide. Where you or I might have one or two computers running XP, businesses might have thousands. When they upgrade away from XP, they will upgrade thousands (this is happening where I work right now ... our IT dept. has hired dozens of temp workers in preparation for the upgrade to Win 7, even though Win 8 is just around the corner)

The fact that XP is the dominant OS right now does not mean that it's better than any other one.
