[Simply Computers] WinXP Sp3 desktop shows unwanted white border...

 

Trying to help a senior who had a mild stroke and an unwanted hand movement caused this one-inch wide border on the left side that had shortcuts for MyComputer, MyDocuments plus a few others. I tried to drag the desktop image to cover it, but it won't go all the way to the edge. Only once before years ago did I see this and it stumped me then...any one else solve this?
