Virus protection software should not have any effect on your drive or its
software. The breakdown of the drive and you putting that new software on my
have just been an unhappy coincidence.
I would go to the disk drive makers Webb site and see if a driver is
available for that model and install that to see if its just corrupted
driver software and if it still does not work then its a new drive.

Gentlemen,
My Disc Drive was working just fine until I updated my virus protection to
Norton 2012 from Norton 360(2011). Everything worked fine last year, but
this year when I updated to the new Norton my Disc drive ceased to operate.
I have tried everything I know. The computer says that the unit is working
fine and the software is good to go, yet I have, obviously an issue. Any
ideas out there?
