Re: [Simply Computers] Black Screen

Thanks, guys, for all the responses and suggestions. As of now I'm trying to get my old pc back on AOL dial-up and THAT's a pain in the derriere but also another issue. I left lap on till power drained overnight, actually for two or three days, turned it back on, got some mojo with F8, F2 and F12. Indeed, on the diagnostics and start-up I got a clean screen with perfect letters,--for less than five seconds. The diagnostics worked briefly and I even got the color tester (the multi-colored lines diaplay) with the hit y or no and I joyously hit y only to have the screen go black again.

The lap screen still ain't workin' and I can't afford a professional fix, not this month. My guess is that it IS the BIOS that's messed up in that something got switched off by mistake, that some power alternator thingie (whatever) got its lines crossed and that the screen is not broken but power disabled (for want of a better term). The Dell tech rep said that this was a possibility, told me how to remove the power coin from within but I simply can't open the lap without destroying it, tried with the smallest Phillips head imaginable and it was a nightmare. I gave up. My hope is that the power shall some day run out on its own and that the BIOS will, as the rep said, revert to factory condition. Whatever. That it was off for so long did bring the screen back to life briefly and one message I got was that something was wrong with my keys! Alas, it was up for a second. My guess is that if the thing is going to come back I'm just going to have to wait it out.

This is going to take patience. I suppose it's possible that the screen's half-dead and that I'm bringing it back to life briefly but I'm hoping/guessing it's something else, shall keep my fingers crossed...
