A few suggestions:

Did you maybe recently format the drive on this laptop? New operating system? That would explain the
loss of sound - driver issue.

Do you have any yellow question marks in the Device Manager, e.g with the Multimedia Audio
Controller? If there is, try a right click on that and let Windows search for the correct driver and
install it.

I notice number 2. is Legacy Audio drivers. According to the Dell website, the audio driver for a
Latitude D620 for both XP and Vista is Sigmatel STAC 92XX. Did you already download this?

You can use one of the free hardware analysis programs to get more info about your audio e.g. SIW.
This usually helps to locate the correct drivers.

And this link might help. A few of the solutions worked here but I'd try the Sigmatel driver first
to see if that fixes it:
