[Simply Computers] Difference in RAM memory

I am working on an HP Pavilion a1100y running Windows XP, and I wish to upgrade the RAM:
Crucial.com says it takes: DDR2 PC2-5300...
The sticks in the machine are: DDR2 PC2-3200u-333...
I have some DDR2 PC2-4200u-444... Will these work?
What does the PC2-xxxx stand for?
Any info on the difference to look for in memory sticks will be appreciated as I have a laptop I'm planning to upgrade also.
Thanks for your help.
Phil
