Thanks, I'll do that although I have run a search and examined every file that contains.jpg or .bmp in its title and there are no other nasties. As no one in the group seems to have any ideas on how it might have happened I think the next step is to ask Canon because it did occur while using one of their scanners and one of their programs.

I have been following your posts, but unfortunately have no idea how this could have happened.
I would like to suggest, however, that you download and run a program such as the free Picassa II from Google.
It will search your entire hard drive (s) and find images that you might not know are there.
It won't explain why you had your particular problem, but may prevent it from happening in the future.
Plus, should a un-expected image suddenly appear at some time in the future, you can say "that wasn't there when I ran Picassa", which may give you a clue as to who was using your computer in the interim.
