Check you cmos, and see if it has been disabled.

Subject: [The Computer Hardware Technician] Disc Drive Issue
Gentlemen,
My Disc Drive was working just fine until I updated my virus protection to Norton 2012 from Norton 360(2011). Everything worked fine last year, but this year when I updated to the new Norton my Disc drive ceased to operate. I have tried everything I know. The computer says that the unit is working fine and the software is good to go, yet I have, obviously an issue. Any ideas out there?
